If you are saying goodbye to someone you know, we have a huge list of pop, rock, R&B, and country songs.

If you are saying goodbye to someone you know, we have a huge list of pop, rock, R&B, and country songs.

Goodbye Can Be Difficult

With each goodbye we say, we mourn the loss of pattern and familiarity in our lives. Marriages, friendships, jobs, and love affairs end. New career opportunities take us to different locations. Children go off to college. Loved ones die.

Some of the hardest goodbyes are the ones that are sudden, unexpected, and don't allow the luxury of parting words or gestures. At times it's a choice, while at others it's chance. If you're fortunate, you get to say farewell. But that often doesn't make the transition easier. Is it any wonder that many of life's most stressful events involve goodbyes?

If you're struggling with a goodbye, why not assemble a Goodbye Playlist for yourself or someone important in your life? Below, we have a long list of pop, rock, and country favorites to get you started. Our list includes songs that are wistful, melancholy, celebratory, grateful, and even snarky. You're bound to find some to ease you through this transition.

1. "Goodbye My Lover" by James Blunt

Clinging to the remnants of a dying relationship, the narrator in this 2005 song reminisces about all that he and his lover have been through. He grieves the loss of their relationship. They have been sweethearts and friends, and it wounds his soul to say goodbye.

2. "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" by Green Day

Sometimes your life path diverges from that of friends and loved ones, as educational opportunities, job changes, or relationship obligations send you to far-flung places. This 1997 song sees such forks in the road as unpredictable and normal. As he says goodbye, the narrator rejoices, "I hope you had the time of your life."

3. "One More Day" by Diamond Rio

Goodbye has been difficult for the narrator in this country song from 2005. He has been left mourning the end of his relationship with the woman he loves, and more than anything he wishes he could spend one more day with her. Don't wait until goodbye to say what you need to say.

Diamond Rio was formed in 1982 when they performed as a musical attraction at Opryland USA Theme Park in Nashville under the name "The Grizzly River Boys." Decades later, the bandmates go by a different name but still haven't said goodbye to one another.

4. "The Dance" by Garth Brooks

If you've ever had a relationship that was perfect while it lasted but ended badly or too soon, then this 1989 country hit will resonate. The man in the song recalls the high point in the relationship when the couple danced under the stars. He had no idea that goodbye was in their future, but he still wouldn't trade their time and experience together for anything:

And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end, the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I'd have had to miss the dance.

5. "Candle in the Wind" by Elton John

Originally written as a tribute to iconic blond actress Marilyn Monroe (née Norma Jean Mortensen), this 1973 song recounts the meteoric rise and tragic death of a Hollywood legend. Because her mother was a paranoid schizophrenic, as a child, Marilyn found herself in foster care and in an orphanage, and she endured abuse and deep feelings of rejection.

As Marilyn became a model and actress and eventually rose to the heights of super-stardom, she struggled with addiction, depression, and deep issues with trust. At only 36 years old, the American icon died of a suspected drug overdose. Her death was ruled a suspected suicide.

"Candle in the Wind" captures both her conflicted and larger-than-life persona:

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in.
And I would have liked to know you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did.

Elton John rewrote the song in 1997 after the death of Princess Diana of Wales. This version became the second-biggest selling song of all time.

6. "Farewell" by Rihanna

In this pop song from 2011, Rihanna is having trouble saying goodbye to an important person in her life who is striking out on their own in search of a better future. She wants to tag along but knows that as much as it hurts, she needs to stay and let them fly free.

"Never part without loving words to think of during your absence. It may be that you will not meet again in this life." - Jean Paul Richter, German writer

"Never part without loving words to think of during your absence. It may be that you will not meet again in this life." - Jean Paul Richter, German writer

7. "I Will Remember You" by Sarah McLaughlin

Standing at the edge of goodbye, the narrator in this 1995 ballad emphasizes to the one she is parting with that it's important to recall the good memories without the tears. She promises to remember her friend and hopes that they will think fondly of her as well.

8. "50 Ways to Say Goodbye" by Train

When the narrator in this 2012 pop song is suddenly dumped by his lover without an adequate explanation, he replies, "Help me, help me, I'm no good at goodbyes!"

He promises to be classy, however when it comes to explaining the demise of the relationship to friends, he generates a number of funny excuses about why the relationship ended. Anyone who has ever experienced a bitter goodbye can appreciate this song.

9. "I'm Movin' On" by Rascal Flatts

This poignant country song from 2001 is about a narrator who has struggled with personal ghosts and demons. Now he's sold his belongings and is moving out of town in search of forgiveness.

Sometimes parting ways is the healthiest for everyone involved:

There comes a time in everyone's life
When all you can see are the years passing by
And I have made up my mind that those days are gone.

10. "Goodbye to You" by Scandal

It's okay to celebrate saying "see ya later" (or "see ya never") if you want to! As much as such loves him, the narrator in this hit song from 1982 is finally done with waiting for her beau to love her back. She's been holding on too long and has decided to cut him loose, promising to recall both the good and the bad times. Sassy and in your face, she tells him that her heart just doesn't feel the same, so "Goodbye to you."

11. "You're Gonna Miss This" by Trace Adkins

Some of us look all too forward to the next phase of our lives without fully valuing what we now have. In this 2008 country ballad, a teenage girl is overly eager about turning 18 and leaving home. Later, a new bride can't wait to have kids as she decorates her one-room apartment, and then a young exasperated mother apologizes to a plumber for her crying children.

The song emphasizes the value of appreciating what you have now rather than wanting to say goodbye to each of life's precious phases. The song resonated with singer Trace Adkins so much because he has five daughters of his own.

12. "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by Simple Minds

In this quintessential '80s hit, the guy that's left dancing alone when his partner says goodbye wonders how parting ways will affect their relationship.

  • Will she call his name?
  • Will she try to deny the depth of their shared feelings?
  • Will she walk on by, pretending "they" never happened?

This song was a worldwide hit in 1985 and appeared in the coming-of-age movie, The Breakfast Club.

13. "You'll Think of Me" by Keith Urban

The heartbroken man in this 2004 country ditty is losing sleep as he ruminates about the way his sweetheart broke up with him (she cheated). He finds solace, however, in mentally fast-forwarding to the day when she comes to her senses and realizes what she gave up. At that point, he plans to be over her and on to the next chapter in his life:

Take your records, take your freedom
Take your memories I don't need 'em
Take your space and take your reasons
But you'll think of me.

14. "Bye Bye Bye" by 'NSYNC

Tired of providing emotional support to someone who doesn't return it, the narrator in this pop song from 200 tells her that enough is enough. He won't be her fool any longer:

Bye bye
I'm checking out, I'm signing off
I don't want to be the loser, and I've had enough.

Ever felt like that?

15. "How Can I Help You Say Goodbye" by Patty Loveless

In this heartwrenching country song from 1993, a devoted mother helps her daughter say goodbye through three important life transitions: moving away from a childhood friend, divorcing her husband, and losing her mother. The mother asks the daughter:

And she said, "How can I help you to say goodbye?
It's okay to hurt and it's okay to cry.
Come let me hold you and I will try.
How can I help you to say goodbye?"

16. "Say Something (I'm Giving Up On You)" by A Great Big World

Anyone who has felt the desperation and loneliness of a relationship that is going nowhere can appreciate this 2013 pop song. The narrator admits he feels depleted and in over his head. He still loves his partner and is pushing aside all pride, begging for some kind of validation in return. Against the deafening silence, he is ready to say goodbye.

17. "What Hurts the Most" by Rascal Flatts

The words that he left unspoken are the ones that haunt the protagonist in this 2006 Grammy-nominated country song. Having said goodbye without expressing himself to the woman he still loves, he must now relive their goodbye and force a smile when he sees their old friends.

Consider it a lesson learned the hard way:

What hurts the most was being so close
And havin' so much to say
And watchin' you walk away
And never knowin' what could've been.

"Every parting is a form of death, as every reunion is a type of heaven." - Tryon Edwards, American theologian

"Every parting is a form of death, as every reunion is a type of heaven." - Tryon Edwards, American theologian

18. "A Better Man" by Clint Black

As he says goodbye to a love he knew wouldn't last, the man in this 1989 country hit expresses gratitude for what he has gained from their relationship. He is thankful for what his partner has given him over the years and for inspiring him to be a better man. He claims that he can do things now that he previously couldn't, and he feels lucky to have known her this way.

19. "Don't Forget to Remember Me" by Carrie Underwood

In this 2006 song, an 18-year-old girl prepares to strike out on her own. As she loads her Chevy, she's more than ready but her mother finds it hard to say goodbye. She offers practical advice, trying to delay their farewell. Later, as the daughter faces bills of her own and the realities of life as an adult, she recalls all that she misses about the life she left behind.

20. "Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac

When you've given your heart to someone, and they won't take it, there's no real choice but to say goodbye. This classic rock song from 1977 is about the gut-wrenching realization that the one you love doesn't love you as much as you love them. The song was written as Lindsay Buckingham's harsh response to "Dreams," a Fleetwood Mac song that Stevie Nicks wrote about wanting to end their relationship.

Questions & Answers

Question: What rock band has a song with lyrics, "you're my favorite goodbye"?

Answer: After searching lyrics databases, what I came up with was "Favorite Goodbye" by Nouri (2019) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VJ6Mz9kRII

Question: There's a song with the lyrics, "I realize you hate goodbyes." What is the name of song and who sings it?

Answer: I found four songs that included the lyrics, "you hate goodbyes" but none that were an exact match for "I realize you hate goodbyes." Here are those four song titles, artists, the year each was released, relevant excerpts from the lyrics and YouTube links (where available):

1) "Let You Go" (2006) by Secret Someones https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KtHXB5S-aw

Honey, I know you hate goodbyes

And you remember all the good times

You don't want to say but I can see it in your eyes

I gotta let you go

You don't want to hurt me

You're so sweet

And I don't blame you for a thing

I can never say what I really mean

I gotta let you go

Think I gotta let you go. ...

2) "Have You Never Ever?" (2006) by Margaret Berger https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAaRhijq7E0

You start a new life

It's like coming home

Somewhere you've never been

Everything is gonna be fine

Everything is alright

You don't know the time

You travel all inside

And you hate goodbyes

Everything is gonna be fine

Everything is alright

Have you never ever felt a love like this before?

3) "Never Give Up" by The Lads (2012)

Never give up

The ukulele trip was canceled 'cause you hate goodbyes

Never give up

If your milk bar's going under right before your eyes ...

4) "Watch Out Vegas; I'm a Show Stopper" (2005) by Her Words Kill https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_y86EtX5Yw

So you, go back

To your ghost town

Because she's my girl

She's my girl

Now I know why you hate goodbyes

Now I know why you hate goodbyes ...

Question: I have the last lines of a song running through my head and want to know the name of it. It was sung by a female, I think Black. The last line is "Goodbye my love, farewell. Any ideas? It's driving me nuts.

Answer: I've looked extensively on this and I'm thinking that you probably want "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)." The last lines, however, are "Farewell my love, goodbye." The song was originally recorded by Gladys Knight & the Pips in 1972 and was a soul/pop crossover hit. A number of other artists have since covered it. Here's the YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATCtgBsfbJE

Question: What is a good song that expresses the message, "Sorry. I'm done here," without being too harsh?

Answer: "It's Time to Move On" by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers (1994) is a good choice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5o582N3wOQ.

Here are some of the lyrics:

It's time to move on, it's time to get going

What lies ahead I have no way of knowing

But under my feet, Baby, grass is growing

It's time to move on, it's time to get going...

Question: I'm moving and want a song for my best friends to always remember me by. Can you suggest one?

Answer: Here's a timeless song that is sweet, sentimental and memorable: "In My Life" by The Beatles (1965) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBcdt6DsLQA

Question: Is there a song you'd suggest for a person who has to leave New York for work?

Answer: If your friend is moving from New York to somewhere else, consider R.E.M.'s "Leaving New York" (2004) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo6Vh4Uz7Sk or Fountains of Wayne's "No Better Place" (2002) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBsEJzDaxoA

If they are leaving home and moving to New York then consider Matchbox Twenty's "Bright Lights" (2002) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLaLsNkaEq8

Question: There's a rousing old war song with lyrics that include, "goodbye, goodbye." What is it please?

Answer: The Five Americans was a 1960s rock band that released a song called "Goodbye." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuWlMw-OZy8

Here are the lyrics:

Goodbye, Mrs. Sorrow

Hope you're feelin' better tomorrow night

Don't put up a fight

It'll do you no good

Hello, Uncle Freedom

I've seen them down on their knees for you

Nothing they wouldn't do

To have you along

I got too many problems

They just don't understand

They think their every wish is my command

Oh, no, Sister Susie

You're in a win or lose affair

Wish I could be there

To help you along

Oh, yes, Brother Michael

We all have every faith in you

And everything you do

All the way round

I got too many problems

They just don't understand

They think their every wish is my command

Goodbye, goodbye

Goodbye, goodbye

Goodbye, goodbye

Goodbye, goodbye

Goodbye, goodbye

Goodbye, goodbye

Goodbye, goodbye

Goodbye, goodbye.

Question: What are some songs about mystery?

Answer: Here are a few songs that meet that description:

1. "She's a Mystery to Me" by Roy Orbison (1989)

2. "Mysterious Ways" by U2 (1991)

3. "The Addams Family Theme Song"

4. "Mystery Train" and "She's a Mystery", both by Bon Jovi (2000)

While those songs literally have "mystery" in them, there are many others that are simply mysterious but do not mention the word "mystery" or "mysterious." Examples of these include:

1) "Marie Laveau" by Bobby Bare (1969)

2) "Hotel California" by Eagles (1976)

3) "Fly Like an Eagle" by The Steve Miller Band (1976)

4) "American Pie" by Don McLean (1971).

I hope with these, you found a song that you were looking for.

Question: What is a good song that expresses the idea, "goodbye to you, I do not want to die"?

Answer: Try the All-4-One song, "Not Ready 4 Goodbye" (2002).

You have assembled a good list here. The first song that popped into my mind, I had forgotten the title but found it by the lyrics. The very first word is "Goodbye" and the name of the song is "I Wish You Love" by Natalie Cole. Others also sang it. Uche - I wonder if you're talking about "Never Can Say Goodbye" by The Temptations (or a number of other artists). We often mishear lyrics. The relevant portion of the lyrics to that song are close: "Never can say goodbye, no, no, no, no, now / Never can say goodbye / I keep thinking that our problems … ." Let me point out that never and always are complete opposites so I think you may have misheard the lyrics slightly. I hope this is the one.

Goodbye Stranger - Supertramp. Always makes me sad

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on June 13, 2019:

Malcolm - Thanks for this suggestion. I added it. Since it was hard to know where exactly to plug a folk song, I put it in the pop table. Have a good weekend.

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on February 10, 2018:

Sally - You're not talking about "Our House" by Madness (1982), are you? If not, perhaps more details (genre, key lyrics you recall) may help another reader or me remember it for you. Thanks for the comment.

sally on February 10, 2018:

There was a song back in I think the 80's where a family was moving and the house was remembering all the good and bad times. For the life of me I can't remember the name. Any clue?

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on December 04, 2017:

Dion - That's one sad, bummer of a song. I've added it to both this playlist and the playlist about loneliness and feelings of isolation: https://hubpages.com/playlists/Pop-Rock-Country-So...

Thanks for your suggestion! Have a good day!

Dion on December 03, 2017:

Goodbye to Love by The Carpenters

Dear Shyron, I have added the song as #100. You continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

Shyron E Shenko from Texas on August 30, 2017:

"Losing You" -Brenda Lee

Don't sigh a sigh for me

Don't ever cry for me

This is goodbye for me

I know we're through

I'm Losing you

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on August 22, 2017:

Roshi - Thanks for the suggestion. I added it to the playlist about Missing Someone You Love: https://hubpages.com/playlists/Missing-You-Playlis...

Roshi on August 21, 2017:

I'm amazed 'Cold One Coming On' by Montgomery Gentry didn't make the list.

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on May 18, 2017:

Ashley Zientarski - Adding this at #97. Thanks so much for stopping by and for taking the time to leave a suggestion!

Ashley Zientarski on May 17, 2017:

I Will Always Love You by Whitney Huston

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on May 05, 2017:

Londy - I've got both Carrie Underwood's version and Wiz Kahlifa's (with Charlie Puth). Is there another that you are suggesting?

Londy on May 05, 2017:

See you again

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on September 12, 2016:

Larry - It makes me wonder whether I should've subdivided the list. 91 is a whole lot. But thank you! Have a great week.

Larry Rankin from Oklahoma on September 12, 2016:

You sure know your music!

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on September 11, 2016:

Valene - I think that one's on my Break Up Playlist. It's desperately heart-wrenching. Thank you for stopping by!

Valene from Missouri on September 11, 2016:

Wow, what a great list you've made! I always liked that "I can't make you love me" song by Bonnie Raitt, which I guess is more a break up song than a goodbye song.

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on September 04, 2016:

Catherine - You have no idea how many times I have the wrong artist and have to double check myself! (That's why it takes me so long to publish these.) You are wonderful just as you are, lovely Catherine! Don't change a thing.

Catherine Giordano from Orlando Florida on September 04, 2016:

FlorishAnyway: Forgive my senility. Now that you mention it, it probably was Peter Paul and Mary. The airplane part probably caused me to think Jefferson Airplane. I can't trust my memory anymore. I am glad you included it.

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on September 04, 2016:

Catherine - A number of artists recorded many of these songs. As for that one, I listed it as #24 and credited Peter, Paul & Mary, although John Denver could have also been mentioned. It does have a very nice appeal, all these years later! Thank you for sharing your trip down memory lane.

Catherine Giordano from Orlando Florida on September 04, 2016:

Another great playlist. But you left off my favorite "I'm Leaving on a Jet Plane" by the Jefferson Airplane. "So kiss me and say you love me..." It is indelible in my brain because I was in San Francisco in the "flower-child" heyday, packed and ready to take a jet plane back to New York City the next morning when I first heard that song.

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on September 02, 2016:

teaches12345 - Thank you for stopping by. Goodbyes can be sad, but the alternative (not having the chance to say goodbye) is so much sadder. I hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend, Dianna!

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on September 02, 2016:

Frank - I used to limit myself to 25, 35, or other round numbers but then found quickly that with new releases there would always be additional songs so why even start out with such a number? It'll only change as people make good suggestions and all. It doesn't take much on my part to go ahead and offer greater content in the form of a table either. Hope that answers it.

Frank Atanacio on September 02, 2016:

91 songs.. goodbye songs.. Just curious Flourish.. why the odd numbers? and thanks for the trip down memory lane..:)

teaches12345 on September 01, 2016:

I hate good-byes but they are part of life. Some of the songs are sad but others give one a brighter hope of reunion.

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on August 29, 2016:

vespawoolf - It's funny how when you read the lyrics of an all-too-familiar song they can sometimes change the meaning of the song for you. Thank you for commenting. Have a great week!

Vespa Woolf from Peru, South America on August 29, 2016:

This seems like an exhaustive list of goodbye songs. I've heard some of these songs over and over again and didn't even realize the lyrics were about this theme. I plan to look up some of the unfamiliar songs. Thank you!

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on August 29, 2016:

Shyron - Thanks so much for faithfully following! I appreciate you! Blessings and hugs right back!

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on August 29, 2016:

Nell - I do as well. I'm not sure how he went through with it, being a personal friend and all. Gives you a lump in the throat to hear it.

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on August 29, 2016:

Peggy - Thank you for your kind kudos! I enjoy researching them and listening to them. Sometimes the lyrics which I thought I knew (haha) end up surprising me. Have a great week! Thank you for commenting!

Peggy Woods on August 28, 2016:

I enjoy these song lists of yours because you always introduce me to some (sometimes many!) that I have not previously heard. Nice job as always. :)

Nell Rose on August 28, 2016:

I remember Elton Johns song so well, watching Princess Dianas memorial, its one of those things that sticks in the mind. love your series!

Shyron E Shenko from Texas on August 28, 2016:

I love all these lists and you have provided enough to last for months.

But I still love the old songs like "Losing you" by Brenda Lee.

Keep them coming.

Blessings and hugs dear friend.

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on August 27, 2016:

Linda - Thank you for taking a look even though you only knew one! I appreciate your readership. Have a great week!

Linda Crampton from British Columbia, Canada on August 26, 2016:

I only know one song that you've reviewed, but it's a song that I love. I always find "Candle in the Wind" very moving. Thanks for another interesting and useful playlist article, Flourish.

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on August 26, 2016:

Carb Diva - Thank you. I am so sorry about the loss of your dear feline friend. I would definitely agree with you about the importance that pets play in our lives and the grief that their passing involves. I have six cats now, have always had multiple cats but recently lost the one I referred to as my "Jesus Christ Cat" because he was such a benevolent and gentle soul. His name was Shepard and he oddly had a neurological disability that mirrored my own MS. We were in the struggle together. He died, however, of cancer of the larynx, crawling up next to me one morning to let me know it was finally his time. We had him euthanized. I'm so sorry that you did not have the chance to say goodbye to your sweet baby. They are definitely our children. She knows that you loved her. I hope you are not afraid to love again, as there are so many darling cats who could use a good pet mom like you. The ranked list I cite is based on psychological research studies and I bet many people do consider pets as family, as you and I do.

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on August 26, 2016:

Audrey - I like that too (as in "see ya never"). Have a great weekend and thank you for stopping by!

Audrey Howitt from California on August 25, 2016:

So many great tunes in this list! I love that goodbye can also be good riddance!

Linda Lum from Washington State, USA on August 25, 2016:

Flourish - Another great series. I really enjoyed this. May I add one more to your list of 'goodbyes' (stressful life events)? The death of a family pet--or maybe that is covered under #3. Our 11-year old kitty died two years ago from a stroke or heart attack. In an instant she was gone, and there was no time for goodbyes. I still ache for her.

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on August 25, 2016:

Heidi - I would bet that's soon sometime! It's funny how many different playlists you can come up with for situations. I've added your suggestion. Thank you!

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on August 25, 2016:

Bill - That's one of Garth's best. I'm not a fan of him coming in and out of retirement. I think he did his best work the first time around when he was all in.

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on August 25, 2016:

Susan - The song by Trace Adkins is so authentic. It's too bad country doesn't extend much beyond the US and Canada. Some of it is absolutely awesome, very catchy, often involving a story. Thank you for stopping by!

Susan Hambidge from Kent, England on August 25, 2016:

I always enjoy reading your 'songs for every situation' compilations. We don't hear a lot of country tracks here in the UK but the Trace Adkins one is so full of emotion and truth, that one really brings a lump to my throat.

Heidi Thorne from Chicago Area on August 25, 2016:

So will the next playlist be Songs about Hello? :) Another great playlist! Here's my add: Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover." Have a great day!

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on August 25, 2016:

The Dance was my number one. Fun series, as I've said many times before. You and I are on the same wavelength with many on these lists. Great minds and all that. :)
